Assistance for Older Adults and the Disabled (Supplemental Security Income)

What is Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?

SSI is financial aid for those 65 or older, blind, or disabled.

Eligibility

To qualify for SSI, you must be at least 65 years old, or disabled or blind, and have income and resources below the program’s limits. It is also only applicable if you are part of the Uniting for Ukraine program.

The dollar amount of the benefit depends on your income, expenses, and living situation and varies by state. Some states pay extra on top of the federal minimum.

How to apply

You can apply for SSI at the closest office of the Social Security Administration. Please bring your passport, form I-94, and Social Security Number to submit the application. For applications based on disability, the Social Security Administration will also require the applicant’s medical records.

When applying for SSI, you may need to show any of the following:

  • Social Security card or number

  • Proof of age (i.e. birth certificate)

  • Citizenship or noncitizen status record

  • Proof of income

  • Proof of resources

  • Proof of living arrangements

  • Medical records

  • Work history (US-based work)

For more information on the application process and what may be required, visit SSA

Keep in mind that the application process can take time, and it's important to be patient during the review and decision-making period. The Social Security Administration suggests keeping a dated record of the information you send in as well as the name of the employee(s) you spoke to. If you have any questions or need further assistance, you can contact the Social Security Administration directly or visit their website for more information.
